What Is A Combi Boiler?
A combi boiler is a convenient heating solution that provides both home heating and hot water directly from the unit.
With no need for a separate water tank, it saves space and offers cost savings on installation and hot water bills.
In the UK, combi boilers are highly popular, delivering strong showers without the need for an additional pump. For optimal comfort, use a thermostatically-controlled shower to maintain a consistent water temperature.
What Type Of Shower Can I Run Off A Combi Boiler?
When upgrading from a traditional boiler and cylinder to a combi boiler, it's crucial to assess the compatibility of your existing shower.
If your previous shower was designed for low-pressure systems and relied on a pump-assisted power shower, it may not be suitable.
Combi boilers generate hot water at mains pressure, making them compatible with mains pressure balanced or thermostatically controlled showers. Ensure the shower you choose is suitable for your new combi boiler to enjoy an optimal bathing experience.
Why Is The Water Produced By My Combi Boiler Chalky Or Cloudy?
Combi boilers directly heat water from the mains, ensuring air-free water flow from the tap.
However, during the heating process, calcium bicarbonate in the water can convert to calcium carbonate, resulting in harmless bubbles of carbon dioxide.
This aesthetic effect is normal and has no impact on water quality or taste. If you allow the water to cool in a glass, the bubbles will dissipate. This occurrence is more prevalent in hard water areas and models with slower or lower flow rates.
How To Bleed Radiators With A Combi Boiler?
Bleeding a radiator involves releasing trapped air to improve the circulation of hot water.
Start by turning off the heating system and letting the radiators cool down.
Locate the bleed valve at the top and have a towel or container ready to catch any water. Using a radiator key or screwdriver, turn the valve counterclockwise to release air, indicated by a hissing sound.
Once water flows steadily, close the valve and move on to the next radiator if needed. Finally, turn on the heating system and ensure the radiators are heating up as expected.
How To Repressurise A Boiler?
To repressurise a boiler, find the filling loop valve near the boiler. Turn off the boiler and open both valves on the filling loop.
Water will enter the system, so watch the pressure gauge. Stop filling when the pressure reaches the recommended level (around 1-1.5 bar).
Close both valves, switch on the boiler, and ensure everything is functioning properly.
What Should Boiler Pressure Be?
The ideal boiler pressure typically falls between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold.
Different boilers may have specific recommendations. Regularly checking the boiler pressure is crucial to ensure it stays within the correct range.
High or low pressure can lead to issues like leaks or inadequate heating.
How Long Does Boilers Last?
Typically, a properly maintained boiler can have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, and some models may even last over 20 years.
However, inadequate maintenance or frequent breakdowns can significantly reduce its longevity.

Why Does My Boiler Keep Losing Pressure?
If your boiler keeps losing pressure, it's likely due to a few reasons. The most common is a leak in the system, which can be a pipe, valve, or radiator.
These leaks gradually lower the pressure. Other possible causes include a faulty expansion vessel or an issue with the pressure gauge.
